Exum Green Beckwith was born in Buckhorn Twp, Wake County, NC, the 4th of 8 known surviving children born (2 boys/6 girls) born to farmers (and later lumber dealer) Calvin Holland Beckwith and his wife, Anne Hasseltine Holloman. Many family records indicate his name was EXAM, but his gravestone reads EXUM.

He was the paternal grandson of Green Beckwith and Lucintha Holland, and gr-grandson of Isaac & Polly Beckwith, all of Wake County, NC. He is a direct descendant of Matthew Beckwith I. (1610-1681) of Yorkshire, England who came to the American Colonies ca. 1645, settling around Lyme, Connecticut. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Edwin Holloman & Sarah "Sallie" Johnson of Wake Co.

Exum developed a bright mind and succeeded in academics. In his early 20's, Exum and his younger sister, Rena Beckwith, arrived in Clayton, Johnston County to take over as principals of Clayton Academy. By 1885, the school was known as Clayton High School. In 1887, Professor E. G. Beckwith opened the Utopian School in Clayton and later that year was elected Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Wake Forest College, in Wake County, NC.

On July 11, 1888, at age 28, the well-respected educator married 18-year old Kittie Christiana Ellington, the beautiful and accomplished daughter of ex-Sheriff Jesse T. Ellington and his (1st) wife, Delia Smith Ellington. Sadly, Kittie died just about a year into the marriage, soon after the birth of their only child, who died about the same time. Prof. E. G. Beckwith died 3 years later on June 25, 1892. He was only 32 years old.

His sister, Rena Beckwith, remained in Clayton, leaving teaching at age 23, in 1889, when she became the second wife of Clayton's wealthiest and most renown citizen, the then 48-year old Ashley Horne. After the death of Ashley Horne in 1913, Rena married (2nd) to the widower, Cary Joseph Hunter in 1920.
