Elizabeth Cates Mathews was the oldest child of John B. Cates and Sarah Simms Cates. Cates family records located at the Hickory County Missouri Historical Society in Hermitage MO say that she was also known as "Aunt Sis". Her family, including two of her father's siblings and families, migrated to Hickory County from Tennessee in the 1840s. She married She married Jasper Newton Mathews there where she remained for the rest of her life.
