Civil War Union Army Officer. H e was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 12th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on April 22, 1862. During the war he served on the staff of Major General Samuel W. Crawford as his Aide-de-Camp before he was discharged due to disability on November 21, 1864.

He rejoined the Union war effort the next February, being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 9th Veterans Reserve Corps. He served in the VRC until his discharge on January 3, 1867.

On March 13, 1865 he received brevets of Captain and Major, US Volunteers for his service at the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness.
