Aunt Alice was born December 21, 1868 and was married to Robert McQuinn on November 26, 1899. Uncle Bob was born in England and still spoke with a detectable British accent when I knew him. He was a miner all his life, so far as I know. How they met is not known to me. It was fun to go to their house when they lived the second house down from us. They always got both Sunday issues of the St. Louis papers that were distributed in the area. One was the St. Louis Globe Democrat and the other was the now defunt St. Louis Republic. They also had a Victrola and they got one of the first radios in the neighborhood -- an Atwater Kent with the speaker on top of the radio itself.
When either Mom or Aunt Alice wanted to talk to the other over the back fence with one lot intervening, they would step out and yell, "Hey Cooney." Where that name came from I never knew, nor it's significance.
Their first child, Leslie, was born March 23, 1901. His full name was Thomas Leslie Simms McQuinn. He married Mary McMackin and they had two boys. Leslie worked in teh mines around for a while as an electrician but gave it up to work as a combined electrician/mechanic, and he was good at both.
Their second child, Hazel, was born February 20, 1903, but died four months later on June 26, 1903. She was buried in old Nine Mile Cemetery but as no marker was ever put up and Aunt Alice was ill and unable to come to the burial, the location of the grave was lost.
Maxine, their last child, was born April 3, 1906. She married Valley Bright and they had three boys. They lived for a while in Valier, Illinois where he was a motorman in the mine. He later moved to the Panama Canal Zone where he operated one of the electric mules that pull ships through the locks. Maxine and Valley were later divorced and she married Henry Dace. They lived in the Centralia area until he died and she still lives on their place there.
