Born Rowan Co., NC. He resided four miles from Old Fort on Crooked Creek, Burke Co, NC (Later McDowell Co.) Captain Thomas Lytle entered Military Service in Rowan, NC, in 1776 serving under Colonel Christopher Beekman Captain Lytle commanded a company of troops in Cross Creek Expedition against Scotch Tories in March, 1776. This expedition was the sequal to the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge which occurred several weeks earliar, in February 1776. In the summer of 1776, Lytle commanded a company of men in Rutherfords Cherokee Expiditon. This campaign was in late summer and Fall of 1776, directed by the Overhills Cherokee. After returning to Burke Co, he took command of western Catawba fontier forts at Fort Cathey, Fort Davidson and Fort Wofford In 1780 he served under LT. Col. Robert Holmes and Colonal Frederick Hambright at the siege of Charleston. Most of these troops returned home before the fall of Charleston in May 1780. Under Colonel Hugh Brevard, of Burke Co; he served as company commander and was at Kings Mt., but did not particapate in the battle. Thomas married Susannah Perkins Potillo in 1772 in Rowan Co, NC(1752-November 17, 1840.) Children as follows John born 1774; George W.born 1785 married Ann Clark; Milton born 1789 married Polly Potillo; Thomas born 1791 married Jennie McEntyre; Elizabeth married John Burgin. There may have been other children. Thomas applied for Revolutionary War pension in 1833 at age 82. He was awarded $217.33 per annum. He died May 31, 1835, He is buried at the Bethel-Cherry Springs Church near Old Fort in McDowell Co, North Carolina. His grave has been marked by Greenlee Chapter, DAR. Thomas's wife Susannah died November 17,1840, and is buried alongside him.
