Leonard served as a Staff Sergeant, Battery A, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Winnebago County, Illinois prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 4, 1941, prior to the war, in Chicago, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

Leonard became a POW of the Japanese Army during the Battle of Bataan in the Philippines.

He "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army of dysentery and beri-beri at Hoten Pow Camp, Mukden, Manchuria 42-123 (China) during the war.

He was awarded the Prisoner Of War Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in the POW Camp in China and was later repatriated here on March 8, 1948.
