William J Allander age 35, was Killed in action (KIA) in "The Battle of Saipan" in "Operation Forager" while serving his country with honor.

William enlisted in the US Army on Nov 3 1942 as PV3 in San Francisco, California.

His tombstone reads; Sgt , 27 Inf Div, 106 Inf Reg. US Army, WWII, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster (2nd Award), Colorado, Age 35 yrs. Although not listed on his tombstone, another web site Military Times states he was awarded the Silver Star posthumously for his gallantry in action in Saipan. They also say he died on Jun 29, 1944.

Saipan cost the United States 16,525 casualties including 3,426 killed in action but it provided the first B-29 base in the Pacific. Japanese losses were over 29,000.
A Japanese Admiral said, "Our war was lost with the loss of Saipan. I feel it was a decisive battle." General Holland Smith considered Saipan the decisive battle of the Pacific offensives.
