Bessie Arvetta Dixon
Bessie Arvetta Dixon , 78, of 6516 SE Reedway, Portland, died July 8 at a local hospital following a lingering illness.
Mrs. Dixon was born Bessie Arvetta Beers on July 24, 1888 in Gresham. She had spent her entire life in the Gresham area, attending school in Hillsview. She was truely a pioneer woman in Gresham.
On July 6, 1906 she married John Cunningham in Portland. Mr. Cunningham died in 1920. She remarried in 1922 to Art Dixon. They were married until 1950 when he died.
Mrs. Dixon attended the Mt. Scott Presbyterian church. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Gresham and the Gresham Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Wesley Cunningham of Corbett and Melvel Dixon of Beaverton; two daughter, Mrs. Clyda Blanc of Portland, and Mrs. E. E. (Evelyn) Stewart of Boring; two brothers, William and Ernest Beers of Portland; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Donley of Gresham; 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in the chapel of Carroll Funeral Home The Rev. George Milne officiated and William Elliott sang. Mrs. Jane Bishop was the organist. Private interment was in the Gresham Pioneer cemetery.
