FUNERAL OF FIREMAN ESTES
IT WAS ATTENDED FROM PILGRIM CHAPEL THIS AFTERNOON
Wayland A. Estes, the member of Engine company No. 4 who was killed in the Harbeck stores fire, was buried this afternoon from Pilgrim chapel, at the corner of Degraw and Henry streets. A detail of eighty men from the fire department and a representation of the Knights of S.t John and Malta attended the services. Chief Nevins issued an official order detailing one man from each company to report to Engine company No. 4. wearing uniform overcoats and caps, white shirts, collars and gloves, and a badge on the left breast shrouded. District Engineer James Doyle was in command of the detail. The order says "Wayland A. Estes was appointed December 15, 1885. He was a thorough fireman, fearless and prompt at the call of duty: his record was most excellent, and his loss is deeply felt by every member of the department." Mr. Estes leaves a widow, a son of 10 years, a daughter 3 years and a baby of 1 month. A check of $1,000from the firemen's relief fund for Mrs. Estes was signed yesterday by Mayor Boody and the trustees of the fund. She will also receive a pension of $300 a year from the city. The bodies of Estes and Spaulding were brought out from the ruiins by Philip Fry of Engine No. 31, who volunteered to climb down the into the burning storehouse.
