Pioneer, Farmer & Newspaper Man Died

Hugh L John passed away this afternoon about 1:30pm [1 Feb 1918] at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Raymond Johnson, 809 1st Ave. Sterling,IL.

Death was due to infirmities of old age and while he had
been feeble for sometime,it had been thought he would pass away soon.

Mr John was one of the oldest settlers in Whiteside County having lived for a great many years in Jordan twp.,[Penrose], coming to Sterling over a quarter century ago.

For many years he was one of the chief stockholders of the
Sterling Gazette.For the past few years he and his wife have been spending most of the time with sons in Utah on a farm he bought a number of years ago.

Up to the time of going to press, no arrangements have been made for the funeral.

The deseased is a brother of George D John of Sterling and father of M D John, Secretary of the association of commerce of Sterling.

Funeral of Hugh Lindsay John Will be held Monday

The funeral of hugh L. John who died Friday,[1 Feb 1918]
from the infirmities of old age, will be held Monday morning at 10 am at the home of his son -in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. S.R. Johnston, 809 1st Ave. Sterling.

The service will be conducted by Rev. E.C. Harris under the auspices of __ Robinson Post G.A.P of which the deceased was a member for many years. A member Burial will occur at Penerose Friends Cemetery. It is requested there be no flowers.

Hugh Lindsay John was born of Quaker parents in Penn., 13 Aug 1833 and died a member of the Society of Friends of Quakers in Sterling, Illinois February 1st 1918 aged 84yrs 5ms 18ds.

He was the fifth of a family of ten and leaves one brother and a sister. He came West a few years before the Civil War and taught school several terms in Southern Illinois. Then he bought land in Jordan twp. and from the farm enlisted in the Union Army and Helped fight the Battle of Perrysville(Civil War) after this he contracted a fever and was later discharged from the Hopital.
