A birthday dinner held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cal Dee Reynolds recently honored Ashley Bartlett on his 94th birthday anniversary.

Mr. Bartlett was born in Vernal, then known as Ashley Forks, April 19, 1880. He was the sixth white child born here. He attended grade school and the Uintah Academy in Vernal. In September of 1899, at the age of 19, he was principal of the Jensen public school.

In July of 1900 he became half owner of the Vernal Express Publishing Company and in that same year, November, he married Winnie Lydia Billings in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

In addition to being very active in his church work, he was named principal in the Ashley District School in 1902. He was called on an LDS mission to the Northern States. He had the dictinction of being the first LDS missionary in Carthiage, Illinois after the expulsion of the Mormon people, where he served from 1903 to 1905.

After his mission he attended Brigham Young University and was Yell-Master and editor of the student publication and a teacher in preparatory department. He was editor of the Utah County Democrat, now Provo Herald, after his graduation from BYU in 1907. He also served as principal of the Pleasant Grove High School newspaper in 1908.

He returned to Vernal in 1911 to again edit the Vernal Express, which he did until November of the following year. He filled many offices in the church including chorister of the Uintah Stake Choir and was elected chairman of the Democratic party, justice of the peace in Vernal precinct, two year commissioner and corresponding secretary of the Claymore Gen. Society.

In August of 1921, his wife died leaving nine children; Winnie Ethlynn (deceased), Rulon Ashley, Price; June Elgar (deceased); Lucille Stevens, Salt Lake City; Maurice (deceased), Idella Lee, Ogden; Shirley C., Salt Lake City; Dean Peirce, Helper; Carol McDaniel, Burbank, California.

Mr. Bartlett moved his family to Price where he had employment as a salesman for the Bates Music Company. In 1925 he married Dora Vilate Fausett in the Salt Lake Temple. This marriage terminated in 1935.

In 1936 Mr. Bartlett returned to Vernal to live and was appointed sexton at the Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery, genealogical representative of the Uintah Stake. He had served in Price as the sexton for two years.

In 1938 November 23, he married Pearlie May Marshall Ross in the Salt Lake Temple. They sold the Vernal home in 1945 and moved to Fontana, San Bernardino, California where he was employed at the U. S. Rabbit Experiment Station where he served until 1949, He was ordained Patriarch June 29, 1952 at the age of 72 in which capacity he served until his release June 17, 1973, because of his health.

He and Mrs. Bartlett moved back to Vernal April 1974. Mr. Bartlett said Vernal has grown until it was difficult to recognize.

He and Mrs. Bartlett's posterity numbers 42 grandchildren and 85 great-grandchildren. Mr. Bartlett has five foster children: Virginia Adams and Carma Preece, Vernal; Eugene Ross, Canada; Lola Warren, Fullerton, California; Sydney Smith, Santa Anna, California.

Ashley Bartlett was born April 19, 1880 in Ashley's Fork, now Vernal, Utah.

In 1900 he became half owner of the newspaper, "Vernal Express"

He married Winnie Lydia Billings November 14, 1900. She died August 3, 1921 leaving nine children. Surviving her, besides her husband, were her children, Winnie Ethlynn Bartlett Harmon, Rulon Ashley Bartlett, June Elgar Bartlett, Maurice Bartlett, Idell Bartlett Lee, Shirley Claymore Bartlett, Dean Pierce Bartlett, Caroll Bartlett McDaniel and Lucille Bartlett.

On June 21, 1921, the family moved to Price, Carbon County, Utah and he worked as a salesman for Bates Stores in Provo, Utah and Ely, Nevada. In 1928 he resigned as sexton of the Price City Cemetery which he had served for two years. On August 3, 1921 his wife, Winnie died.

On February 20, 1925 he married Dora Vilate Fausett in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and divorced on February 4, 1936. He lived in Nebraska a short time and moved to Vernal, Utah and was appointed sexton and superintendent for the Vernal Memorial Park.

In 1937 he had an accidental rupture in his right groin (hernia) and had it operated on successfully.

He married Pearlie May Marshall Ross November 23, 1938 in Salt Lake LDS Temple, Salt Lake County, Utah. In 1939, they broke ground for a new home at 377 West 2nd South, Vernal, Utah.

In 1945 they sold their home in Vernal and moved to 8652 Cypress Avenue, Fontana, San Bernardino County, California. On January 19, 1974 they sold this home for $10,858.69.

They moved to Maeser, Uintah County, Utah. On August 14, 1976 Pearlie broke her right leg. One day after her 84th birthday she passed away.

He moved to Salt Lake City and lived with his granddaughter, Frank and Betty Stevens Longson, 1397 E. 3955 South. On April 21, 1979, they celebated his 99th birthday.

He had a bad fall on December 3, 1979 and broke his ribs and was immobile. On December 7, he was placed in the Terrace Villa Rest Home, 4700 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. He died quietly in his sleep of pneumonia, December 10th at about 7:30 p.m.

Interment was made in the Vernal Memorial Park on December 13, 1979.

Surviving him are two sons, Rulon Ashley Bartlett and Shirley Claymore Bartlett, and two daughters, Lucile Bartlett Stevens and Carol Bartlett McDaniel, 29 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
