Alfred Bernard Shoemaker died July 12, 2008 at Hays Medical Center following a brief illness. Alfred was born August 4, 1925 in Lucerne, Ks. to Arthur B. and Eva (Aumiller) Shoemaker.

He married Simone Noel in Bleret, Belgium on Feb. 14, 1946.

Alfred was a decorated WWII veteran, serving in the United States Army Infantry. He was awarded a bronze star for bravery and received a Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in the Battle of the Bulge.

Alfred and his wife owned and operated the Hays City Bakery for many years. He retired from Fort Hays State University in 2000. Alfred was a member of the V.F.W. Post 9076 and a past member of the American Legion. He was an avid stamp and coin collector and enjoyed hunting.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Simone, of the home and his children: Alan B. Shoemaker of Hays; Suzanne and Mick Bollig of Hays; and Marcel and Megan Shoemaker of Abilene, Ks.; and by a sister, Nadine Oberkrom of Agra, Ks.

Alfred has 13 grandchildren; Noel and Jason BasgaII, Aaron B. Shoemaker, Brandy Shoemaker, Michael Bollig, Dylan Shoemaker, Elizabeth Shoemaker, Jonathon Bollig, Brianna Murray, Stephanie Shoemaker, Brian Shoemaker. Brendan Arnold, Lindsey Middleton, and seven great grandchildren.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Victor and Donald C. Shoemaker, and a granddaughter. Erica Bollig.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph's Church in Hays. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery with graveside military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday and from 8:45 to 9:45 A.M. Tuesday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine Street. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Hays Medical Center or to the organization of the donor's choice.
