Private in the West Virginia 7th Regiment Cavalry, Co. H. Enlisted on September 1, 1862 in Cabin Creek, Virginia, at the age of 18. He was a farmer and unmarried.
Taken prisoner on April 8, 1864, Kanawha Valley, while on Veteran Furlough, first confined in CS Miley Prison, Richmond, Virginia and transported to Andersonville Prison,May 21, 1864, where he died of "debilitas"

Son of Henry H and Elizabeth Rutroff, nee Phares, of Kanawha, Virginia on the 1860 census. Known siblings are Mary Rutroff, Eliza Petry Rutroff, John Rutroff, Joseph Howard Rutroff, Margaret Rutroff Reatherford.
