John David Burkhart was the third of thirteen children born to Coriolanus Domaras and Caroline Lavinia (Goff) Burkhart, who had helped settle Albany, OR in 1847. He was born Nov 1st, 1855, when Oregon was still a Territory and was raised on his parents' donation land claim in the Harrisburg area. He met Sylonia Hale, the daughter of Milton and Susanna (Brown) Hale, [who were also Oregon Pioneers], and they married in 1885. They settled onto their own farm in West Albany and were happy together, despite the fact they had no children of their own. They had many nieces and nephews to share their love with. In 1917, John was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had surgery, but the cancer had spread and it caused his death on Oct 11th, 1917, just a few weeks before his 62nd birthday. His grief stricken wife buried him at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn County, Oregon, in the area where his parents had been laid to rest. Sylonia never remarried, but lived another 22 years until her heart failed her. She passed at the Albany General Hospital on Nov 21st, 1939, and was buried next to her beloved husband at Riverside Cemetery. Now they Rest in Peace together in Paradise.
