Martha Marie Holmen (Marti Marie Olsen), a daughter of Neils and Ingeborg Neilsdatter (Borrestad) Olsen, was born on April 14, 1855 in Gjerpen near Skein and Porsgrund, Telemark, Norway. Martha's family took the name of Holmen when they migrated to America. Holmen was a little inlet in the Fjord on which are located Skein and Porsgrund. It is now filled in so that it is a part of Undredahl.

When Maria was seven years old, the family consisting of the father, the mother, brother Ole, Nikolai and baby Michael came to America. There was much sickness on the ship. Baby Michael died and was buried at sea. The family first home was near Sharon and Beloit in southern Wisconsin. The county was near Boone and Belvidere as it's county seat. Relatives of the family were here in America in the 1830 lived here. Their first child born in America , little daughter Mathilda was born here. After the Civil war was over and the Indian troubles subsided, the family moved to southern Minnesota near Frost and Briclyn. Here Maria married Johannes Underdahl on June 6, 1876 in Faribault Co., MN. With this event began a new generation of Underdahls in America.

Before they left this location, Johannes and Maria were the parents of Ingeborg (Belle); John, Nels Cornelious; Eda Mathilda. In 1882 the family moved to Trail County, North Dakota where land opportunities were available and pioneered until 1892. Four more children: Ida Mathilda, Oline, Andy and Marta Josephine came along to bless this home. . At this time, the family made another move back to Minnesota in Elmore where Rogina Henrietta was born and then on to Kenyon where Mae Julia was born on May 4, 1898 and later on they moved to Cottonwood County, Minnesota and from there to Minneapolis where misfortune struck. On December 30, 1900, the father of the family, Johannes died from a brain tumor. The children were scattered among relatives during those hard years. A desire to get them all together again, prompted the two older sons, John and Nels and their mother to move to North Dakota where a quarter section of land was made available to them by a relative of the family John Uttergarn, in exchange for their house in Minneapolis plus a cash payment. This land was south west of Minot in what is called the Drady Community where there was a county store and post office. Nels and Ida remained in Minneapolis because they both held good jobs there but after the family got settled they joined them and the whole family grew to maturity in this community. Much of the history of this community is associated with the Underdahl Family. Andy was the only one who never married and was the last to leave the farm when his mother retired.
