The Wednesday, August 4, 1943 edition of the Greensboro Daily News (page 9) included:
Rockingham Soldier Dies From Wounds at Florida Base
Reidsville, Aug. 3. ---Pvt. William Alvis Walker, 32, whose home was in the Pleasant Grove community, route 1, Reidsville, died Monday at Bushnell army base near Orlando Fla., from gunshot wounds. Information from the base where Private Walker was stationed, did not tell the cause of the shooting.

Private Walker had been in the army since October 1942. Before entering service he was engaged in farming. He was a son of W. I. Walker and the late Mrs. Mattie Allen Walker.

Surviving are the father; four brothers, Allen, Marion and Lee Walker of Reidsville, route 1 and Pfc. Malcolm Walker, stationed by the army at Camp Cook, Calif., and three sisters, Lucille, Moreen, and Maggie Walker, route, Reidsville.

The body will be sent home for burial but funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Reidsville, Aug. 6. --- Funeral for Pvt. William Alvis Walker , 32, who died Monday at Bushnell army base near Orlando, Fla., will be held Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at New Hope Primitive Baptist church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Full military honor will be paid by the Reidsville state guard unit.
