A veteran of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private on 20 December 1861 then enlisted in Co. K, 7th Vermont Infantry as a Private on 12 February 1862. He was promoted to Full Corporal in March 1864 and to Full Sergeant on 01 November 1864. He mustered out on 18 May 1865.

After the war he worked as a granite cutter for Riverton Memorial Inc which in 2000 was still in business. He carved the stairs leading to the sepulcher for William Stowell which is carved in a huge boulder at the main corner of Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, Vt. The photo on page 2 is that of his cenotaph located at the base of the boulder.
