Urich-Montrose Herald Tidings, Aug 25 1961 - Joe Dennis, Young Businessman of Clinton, Dies - The community was deeply shocked to learn of the death last Friday, Aug. 18, of Billy Joe Dennis, 35, of 512 Truman St., Clinton, a car dealer and owner of Dennis Motors, 132 North Main St., Clinton, also a popular modified stock car race driver. Mr. Dennis became ill on Tuesday, Aug. 8 and at Wetzel Hospital, the next day, underwent an emergency operation for a ruptured appendix. Death resulted about 11:00 a.m., last Friday from peritonitis. Mr. Dennis had operated his business on North Main St., about a year and previous to that was lessee for a time of the Cities Service Station at the corner of South Main and Ohio Street. For more than 10 years before that he was a mechanic at the Walker Motor Company, Clinton. He also is remembered as a top-notch race driver in modified stock car racing having won various events and was one of the favored drivers of the Golden Valley Speedway. He had planned to enter the races at Sedalia this past Friday. He was a member of the Central Missouri Racing Association and had been a member of the Golden Valley Association and the Ozark Speedways. Trap shooting was also a favorite hoppy of Mr. Dennis and he was a member of a gun club at Sedalia. A veteran of the US Marines, during World War II he had served in the Pacific. He was a member of the local Clem P. Dickinson American Legion Post. Mr. Dennis was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Bates County near Mayesburg, the son of Joseph A. and Harriett Hoffman Dennis. There he grew to manhood. On June 9, 1947, he married Dorothy Berks and they established their home in Clinton, their residence since. He leaves his wife and children of the home; a daughter, Carolyn Sue, 13; three sons, Larry Joe, 12, Ronnie Lee, 11, Tommy Ray, 4; his mother, Mrs. Harriett Dennis, Clinton; five sisters, Mrs. Harry (Mable) Doll, of near Urich, Mrs. Charles (Elma) Young, Montrose; Mrs. George (Lottie) Schwenck, Nevada, Mrs. Gene (Lela) Holston, San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Ben (Dorothea) Briley, El Paso, Tex.; four brothers, Carl, Clarence (Dock) and Jay of near Urich; Robert, of Ohio State; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Aug. 21, at White Oak Methodist Church. Interment was in White Oak Cemetery. Those attending the funeral services from Montrose were Mrs. Ida Sickman, Mrs. Dolores Pratt and two daughters, Mrs. Leo Munsterman and Wilfred Berks.
