Husband of Matilda Ann (Sargent) Helmick.

Son of Eli and Rachel (Villars) Helmick.

Sentinel on the Border, Oct. 10, 1879,
page 1:
Died
On Oct. 5th, Hon. H.T. Helmick, after a short but painful illness. The circumstances demand more than a passing notice. On Aug. 25th, Mrs. Matilda Helmick, the wife of Mr. H., died quite suddenly. Then on Sept. 17th, little Harry Pugh passed over; on Sept. 18th, little Mary Pugh, aged 3 years, also passed over. These were the grand children of Mr. Helmick and since the mother's death the daughter had been living at her afflicted father's. Then Dr. Helmick was taken severely sick and also passed away quite suddenly, on the morning of Oct. 5th, but even this does not finish the chapter of trouble, for now their oldest son, aged about sixteen, lies at death's door with the same malignant fever. It is very doubtful if the young man recovers. Mrs. Pugh, the only surviving daughter, has just recovered from a dangerous attack of the same fever, so also has one of the children. Thus in a short space of about five weeks, four of the family of eight persons have passed away. The Dr. was a member of the Kansas Legislature at the time of his death, highly respected and much loved by all. He and his wife were members of the M.E. church and will be sadly missed much by the society and community.
