Patricia L. Hayward, 72, of Independence, died Sunday, July 13, at Buchanan County Health Center LTC, following a short illness.

She was born March 17, 1936, in Dunkerton, daughter of Henry A. and Nela Mildred Anderson Nieth. On July 11, 1959, she married Dale Frederick "Shorty" Hayward in Freeport, Ill. He died in 1989

Mrs. Hayward attended school in Jesup. Before retiring in 2006, she worked in the dietary departments of Peoples Memorial Hospital and the Independence High School. Mrs. Hayward was a member of the Buchanan County Historical Society, the Buchanan County Tourism Bureau, and the Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary. She also was an avid bowler and was a past secretary and past president of the Independence Women's Bowling Association.

Survived by: two daughters, Tammy (Curt) Fisher and Micky (Mark) Crawford, both of Independence; a son, Jeffery (Sally) of Independence; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Judy (Larry) Price of Independence and Shirley Buzynski of Fairbank; and two half brothers, Francis Zuck of Waterloo and Merle Zuck of Florida.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Independence. Public visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Independence.
