George Coval Russell was born in Geneva, Ontario, New York to Edward Russell and Rachel Payne both from England. He was one of twelve children and was related to Lord John Russell.

George married Mary Louise "Mollie" Curtis in Geneva, New York on December 26, 1860. Mollie was the daughter of William Satterlee Curtis and Julia Ann Chappell.

George and Mollie were the parents of three children, Carrie Payne Russell, who later married Howard James Fowler; Harry Wakefield Russell, married to Iambi Alice Carr; Charlotte Elizabeth "Lottie" Russell, who married Lester Pollard.

On 7 August 1862,at the age of 27, George enlisted in the Army to fight in the Civil War. He was made a Corporal in Company E, 126th NY Infantry Regiment out of Geneva, New York. He was wounded during the Battle of Maryland Heights at Harper's Ferry and again at Gettysburg. He transferred into Company K, 6th Regt Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 15 Mar 1864 as an ambulance waggoneer. He mustered out 9 Jun 1865 at Washington, DC.

On the advice of his Physician George moved his family to Paso Robles, California by way of Missouri in the mid 1860's. The family moved to San Jose, California and then bought 160 acres in Selma, Fresno County.

George and Mary moved to San Bernardino in 1887 with their oldest daughter Carrie and then to San Jose in 1888 where Carrie was offered a teaching position at Grant School.

In 1911, during a visit to their son Harry's home in Dinuba, George became ill and died in Mollie's arms.

George was buried with full Veteran's honors at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose. He was a member of the Phil Sheridan Post of the G A.R.

He left a wife, three children, sixteen grandchildren and a great grandaughter.
