Joyce was born on Oct. 17, 1920, in Webster County, Iowa, daughter of Oscar and Effie (Bodell) Anderson. Upon graduation from Burnside High School she attended business school in Des Moines, Iowa. Following her marriage to her high school sweetheart, Norman Alexander Johnson, the couple farmed in the Calendar, Iowa, area where their three daughters were born.
In 1957 they moved to Northfield where Joyce worked as a secretary first for the St. Olaf College Health Center and later at Carleton College. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Joyce is survived by her two daughters, Anne Larson of St. Paul, Minn., and Susan (Dave) Stoddard of Ely, Minn.; five grandchildren, Amy (Karl) Geisler of St. Paul, Jeff (Diane) Stoddard of Grand Marais, Minn., Donna (Tracy) Anfinson and Teresa (Dale) Dexter of Ft. Lupton, Colo., and Alex (Valerie Hendrickson) Rickman of Longmont, Colo.; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Martha Lundgren of Burnside, Iowa, and Mary Linder of Park Rapids, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; daughter, Norma Rickman; grandson, Matthew Larson; parents; sisters, Geraldine and Harriett; and brothers, Don, Allison and Jonathon.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Northfield Retirement Chapel, with the Rev. Diane Goulson officiating. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 18 at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield, and will continue one hour prior to the service Saturday at the retirement center.
