US Congressman, New York City Mayor. Born in the Flushing area of Queens, he engaged in mercantile pursuits before being elected to Congress as a Jacksonian Democrat from New York. He served a single term, from 1833 to 1834, when he resigned, having been elected Mayor of New York City. Mayor from 1834 to 1837, he later served as director of several banks and trust companies. He was collector of customs at the port of New York from 1845 to 1849.
