US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1897 and commenced law practice in Albany, Texas. He was elected judge of the forty-second judicial district of Texas in 1908 and served until 1916. In 1917, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fifth Congress and to the five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1929. In May 1930, he was elected to the Seventy-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert Q. Lee and reelected to the two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1937. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he resumed legal practice and engaged in the raising of cattle until his death.
