William Baker Leland, 93, husband of Ruth McCrackin Leland of Newberry, SC passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2008. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Barnwell Leland, of Rockville, SC. The relatives and friends of William Leland are invited to attend his funeral service on Saturday, July 19, 2008 in St. John's Episcopal Church, John's Island at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. John's Episcopal Churchyard. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 18, 2008 in J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Born July 25, 1914 in McClellanville, South Carolina, Mr. Leland was the son of the late Rutledge Baker Leland and Lucille Morrison Leland. He graduated from Clemson University in 1935 with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He served his country in World War II as an engineer in the Navy Seabees where he was stationed on Guam in the Pacific Theater. He practiced engineering in Charleston, South Carolina for over 55 years where his company designed over 2200 jobs ranging from churches and schools to government buildings. He was licensed by examination as a professional engineer in both electrical and mechanical engineering. In 2000, he received the Engineer of the Year award from The Associated General Contractors of Charleston, SC. Mr. Leland was a faithful member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Mt. Pleasant, SC, where he served on the vestry and as one of the wardens. He was also an active member of the Charleston County Republican Party as well as a member of Hobcaw Yacht Club. He loved sailing and racing Blue Jays for many years. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Leland of Newberry, SC; sons, William B. Leland, Jr. and his wife Emily of Wadmalaw Island, SC and Richard G. Leland of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter, Henrietta Leland Whelchel, and her husband John of Atlanta, GA; step-sons, Thad McCrackin and his wife Jena of Beaufort, SC and William McCrackin and his wife Tanya of Chapin, SC; step-daughter, Laurie McCrackin King and her husband Bill of Columbia, SC; brother, Rutledge B. Leland, Jr. of McClellanville, SC; sister, Agnes Leland Baldwin of McClellanville, SC, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Allison Koelling and Lila DuPre, and one brother, James M. Leland.
