John B. Barham was born in Stokes County, North Carolina. His family moved to Kentucky then pioneered to Coles County, Illinois where he helped his father, Rev Daniel Barham, erect log-cabins in Goose Nest Prairie. Rev Barham is buried next to Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas Lincoln, in the Thomas Lincoln Cemetery in Pleasant Grove Township, Illinois.

John B moved his family West as '49ers, settling first in California as a rancher at John Sutter's Hock Farm in Yuba City, the first large-scale agricultural settlement in Northern California.

His children went on to become California leaders like three-term U.S. Congressman John All Barham, rancher Henley W. Barham, and Anaheim Sheriff, Richard M. Barham. His eldest son, James F. Barham, along with his son, John Henry, founded the city of Barham, California, which eventually merged with the city of San Marcos in Northern San Diego County.

John B's grandsons included Los Angeles Herald newspaper publishers, Guy and Frank Barham (friends of William Randolph Hearst), Edwin Chester Barham (lawyer), Dr. William Wirt Barham (Dentist/Calif Highway Development), Aubrey Barham (Lawyer/Santa Rosa Councilman), along with great granddaughter, Patte Barham, who was a reporter, writer and Los Angeles area columnist for the Tolucan Times.

Married Jemima Moore on Feb 18, 1826. They had eight children.
