Paper: Modesto Bee, The (CA)
Deceased: H. CHRISTOFFERSEN, TURKEY "GREAT,' DIES
Date: January 21, 1998

Holger Christoffersen, considered one of the big names in the turkey business, died Sunday. He was 87. "He was one of the greats in the business community," City Councilman Larry Rumbeck said. Mr. Christoffersen started in the turkey business at age 14 by working at Christoffersen Poultry Egg and Feed Market, owned by his brother Enoch, who later served as Turlock's mayor. Under their leadership, the store grew into Valchris Inc., the largest independent turkey-processing plant in the nation. In 1975, Valchris was sold to the Modesto Grange Co., a turkey-processing company that also started out as a feed business, in 1874. Mr. Christoffersen retired from the company one week later. Grange later was bought by Foster Poultry Farms. Mr. Christoffersen also started CalChris Holstein Dairy in 1946 on Tuolumne Avenue. That dairy still operates today. Between 1961 and his retirement in 1975, he served stints as president of the Turlock Golf and Country Club, president of the Far West Turkey Show, member of the California Poultry Improvement Advisory Board, president of the California Turkey Industry Federation and chairman of the California Turkey Industry Board. He was a past president and active member of the Turlock Exchange Club until his death. Mr. Christoffersen also was a member of Bethel Temple in Turlock, was a Sunday school teacher, helped purchase property for the temple's Sunday school and sanctuary, served as a temple board member and was an adviser for Bethany College and President of Miracle Foundation, a Christian Ministry for Stanislaus State University students. Mr. Christoffersen was born Jan. 19, 1910, in Minden, Neb., and moved with his parents to Turlock in 1913. He is survived by his children, Carmen Harris, Delores Sondeno and Norma Green, all of Turlock, and Larry Christoffersen of Turlock; sisters, Esther Knutsen and Dorothy Rapp, both of Turlock; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bethel Temple, followed by a service at Turlock Memorial Park. Remembrances may be made to the HDC Memorial Fund of Bethel Temple, Third and A streets, Turlock 95381.
