Levi Anderson was born January 22, 1842, and departed this life at Birmingham, Iowa, October 29, 1915, at the age of seventy-three years, nine months and seven days. He was the oldest son of John and Elizabeth Anderson. Deceased was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio. Although only four years of age at the time, he yet retained the recollection of the journey to Iowa which was made by team across the country. With the exception of three years in the south and west, the balance of his life was spent in Van Buren county, Iowa. His childhood days were spent in the usual manner of farmer lads, and until twenty years of age he remained under the parental roof when he enlisted, Aug. 15, 1862, in the Union army as a member of Co. D. Thirtieth Iowa Infantry. He was discharged Jun 17, 1865, after having served three years, in which he participated in some twenty battles. He faithfully performed his duty throughout the entire service, but came out of the army with impaired health and never regained the strength of former years. He was united in marriage with Margaret Jane Wharton, March 15, 1868. To this union eight children were born. Six children, four boys and two girls, remain to mourn his departure: Margaret E, wife of Rev. A. O. Nash of Newton, Iowa; J. R., Z. F. and Lewis, all of Birmingham; R. E., and Lola A., wife of P. B. Bonnett, of Chicago. All were with him at departure. Several years since he made his peace with his maker, and he could say "God's will be done." He was a very sacrificing father for his children, always longing for and mindful of their comfort and welfare. From us has gone one whom we shall greatly miss, but out loss is his gain for we shall meet him again around the throne of God. Deceased was a great Bible reader, and said in his last years God had shown him many things, and he was thankful and praised Him for it. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church in Birmingham Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Mendenhall of Fairfield, assisted by Rev. J. W. Lambert of Birmingham. Williams Bros.' Quartette furnished the singing. Burial was in the Birmingham [Maple Hill]cemetery beside his wife.
