James, Mildred W.

Mildred Louise Wallace James of Austin, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, went home to be with our Lord on July 10, 2008. She was born Aug. 12, 1921 at Mantua, the oldest of four children of James O. and Johnnie Wallace. She was raised on a farm in Collin County, graduating from Gunter High School and later the Dallas Business College.

Mildred married Charles A. James on Nov. 10, 1940, moving to Dumas. During Charles' service with the U.S. Navy, Mildred also lived in San Diego, Calif. and Burk. In 1946, she and Charles returned to Dumas and began raising a family of three sons. Over the years, Charles' career required relocating the family to Amarillo, Lake Charles, La. and finally Austin in 1965. Mildred devoted her early years to working at home raising her family while actively participating in church activities and with local community projects. In Austin, Mildred worked for the Internal Revenue Service; and she and Charles were active members of the Cameron Road Church of Christ.

Following retirement from the IRS, Mildred devoted her time and resources to her church, the Pecan Springs Neighborhood Association and supporting a number of charities. She was well known at Cameron Road and in the neighborhood for her chocolate chip cookies. In 2003, Mildred moved to south Austin and has been a resident of West Oaks Rehab and Healthcare Center for the past two years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles, parents and brother Raymond Wallace. Her survivors include sons Dwain James and Anne Glasgow of Austin, Robert and Diane James of Kingwood and Jerry and Denise James of Austin; sisters Maurine Tillett of Whitewright and Dorothy Fleming of Sherman and sister-in-law Viola Wallace of Seagoville; grandchildren Chris James, Jeffrey James, Kacie Nesby, Melanie Hillin, Amanda Krause, and Shelley James; and 10 great grandchildren.

Mom was a wonderful and faithful wife, a loving mother; a caring grandmother and great grandmother - "Grandma James". She taught us how to walk, talk, to be respectful of others, good manners, how to serve others and many, many other valuable life lessons, but most of all she taught us about our loving Heavenly Father, Jesus His Son, our Savior and the Holy Spirit, our Comforter in this life. She was a living example of the "Fruits of the Spirit "of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and self control. She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman and we are blessed to be her children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren and we thank God for her legacy of faithfulness and love.

The family wishes to thank the physicians and staff at Austin Heart, Capital Nephrology Associates, Texas Diabetes & Endocrinology, St. David's South Austin Hospital, West Oaks Rehab Center and Harbor Hospice for the quality of care and warm friendship extended to Mildred over the years; and, to the family at Western Hills Church of Christ for the prayers and visits.

The family hosted a visitation at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd on Saturday, July 12, 2008. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2008 at Cameron Road Church of Christ, Austin. A visitation will be held at Flesher Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, Texas from 10 a.m. -noon Monday, July 14, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2008 at Flesher Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Van Alstyne Cemetery.
