The Civil War Pension Card is important because with these numbers relatives can request copies of his Civil War Records including his medical and service records from the National Archives, in Washington, D.C.. There is a small copying fee/per page and no research fee. As can be seen his widow, Sarah, filed to continue the pension payment in her name until her death. The payment depended on what the claimant's health condition was at that time of filing. Army doctor's were used for physicals as time progressed until death occurred. The fee payed was also increased with time by the United States Congress. The original disability had to start during time spent in the service. Like gun shot wound, or malaria, or starvation and imprisonment. Also, with these records one can apply for a grave marker if none exists.
