Uncle Bob, as most called him, went to school in a small building on the Hondo Creek built by his father as one of the first schools in the county. He helped on the ranch with the cattle and horses. His mother took him by stagecoach to Luling, Caldwell County, Texas, where they caught a train going part of the way up the Chisolm Trail. He was a tall man and very jovial. He served in the Spanish-American War where he operated a telegraph machine. He also served with the 7th Service Company U.S. Army Signal Corps in WWI. He played baseball with the Devine Grays and was a devout follower of the game.

Uncle Bob owned about 160 acres of land in the Blackjack area east of Devine, Medina County, Texas.

He married Julia Ramsey. Her sister's daughter, Irene, married Mr. Hurley of Pleasanton, Atascosa County, Texas, the founder of Hurley's Funeral Home.

Julia was an usually beautiful woman. She was hanging curtains in her home when she fell and suffered a miscarriage. The unborn child was not discovered until she was undergoing an operation in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. She never recovered from the accident or operation. She is buried in the Devine Evergreen Cemetery next to her husband - Uncle Bob.
