Dedication To Victoria Gibson Rogers*

It is a privilege to dedicate the Homecoming Reunion Celebration to the memory of Mrs. Victoria Gibson Rogers. She could easily have been called Victoria Regina, for she was indeed like royalty to all of us who knew her. She was in every respect a very proper person – a lady – a teacher par excellence.

Victoria Rogers was the model for other teachers who imitated her without shame or pretense otherwise. Whenever a new teacher or principal came to town, he or she was more likely than not to board at the Gibson home - a large two-story house on South Street at Dummitt Avenue - until permanent quarters could be found. She was master teacher. Her students carried many of her mannerisms into their own adulthood. They were proud to have been taught oratory, penmanship or manners by "Miss Vic."

Principals and teachers came and went, but "Miss Vic" was the enduring standard of excellence to be imitated. She recognized students of exceptional ability and helped the family get them into college. In many instances she took them in her car to the college they attended. It can be said that "Miss Vic" was the "mother" of education for Black youth in Titusville. She was as strong as steel, yet as gentle as an angel. Her dedication to the Black youth of Titusville is reflected in the words of Carl Sandburg:

"Lay me on an anvil, O God
Beat me and hammer me into a crowbar
Let me pry loose old walls
Let me lift and loosen old foundations.

Lay me on an anvil, O God
Beat me and hammer me into a steel spike
…Let me be the great nail holding a skyscraper
Through blue nights into the white stars."-
