Inventor. Born in Rochester, New York, he was a pioneer in fish farming Pisciculturist and Aquaculture. He established the first fish hatchery in the United States at the town of Caledonia and was successfully farming salmon by 1867, later expanding his techniques to other species of fish. In 1868, he was appointed one of the fish commissioners of New York and in 1871, he transported the first fish shad ever taken to California. As a result, over 1,000,000 marketable shad were sold on the Pacific coast in 1885.
