Sadye L. Gibson, you and your mother and father were dedicated to the proposition that you would become a teacher. You completed the eighth grade in Punta Gorda, FL, your home. You then went to Fort Myers, FL, where you finished tenth grade, and from there to Florida A.&M. High School from which you graduated. You graduated from Bethune-Cookman College with the AA degree, and from Florida A.&M. with the B.S. degree. You did further study at Columbia University.

You came to Titusville, FL in 1926, where you became the wife of William Gibson. You are the mother of Cornell and Vincent (now deceased). You taught for 41 years in Titusville, FL. Forty-one years says the official record, but we know that you have contributed at least half a century on behalf of the poorest, the most needy, and the humblest of your race.

We stand here sixty years past your coming to Titusville, FL, to pay a humble and sincere tribute to you. Hundreds of your former students will carry in their hearts and souls your fine example of truth and beauty and your quest for knowledge. You gave us cause to stand tal1, to have hope in a world that deprecated our dignity and self-worth. Your name must surely be on the roll of those Black patriarchs of yesteryear and today who lifted weak and fragile Black youths by helping them to have patience, to persevere, to endure wrong for a season, to acquire and use skills, to compete, and to believe in themselves, their families, and God. You taught much more than reading, writing, and arithmetic - you taught how to survive in an American crucible designed to crush the manhood and dignity of Black people. You taught, most of all, how to love, protect, and help one another. God sent you to us. We thank God. We thank you. This Medal of Merit is a symbol of our love, respect, and appreciation for your contribution to our lives.
