Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Dolyna in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire, presently part of Ukraine, Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky entered seminary in Lviv, successively furthering his studies at Innsbruck's University in Austria, the Theological Faculty of Sion in Switzerland and in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute. Collaborator of the Vatican Radio and spiritual director of the Ukrainian seminaries in Washington and Stamford, he furthermore served as faculty member in several schools and colleges between 1969 and 1979. Pope John Paul II elected him archbishop of the see of Philadelphia of the Ukraines on September 13, 1979, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following November 12 in the Sistine Chapel from the Pontiff himself, being thus the first time for the then newly elected Pope to celebrate an Oriental rite. Named coadjutor archbishop with right of succession of the major archbishopric see of Lviv of the Ukraines on March 27, 1980, he succeeded Cardinal Josyf Ivanovycè Slipyj on his demise on September 7, 1984.
