James (called Barrett) was known as the puzzel man for puzzels he worked in metal and wood. He was a stock farmer 4 miles Southwest of Knoxville in Marion County and was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church. Barrett had also taught school at Burr Oak

James was 1st married to Emaline Bye daughter of Edward Paxson and Lovinia Palmer Bye on 2 March 1882. They had 2 sons William and John. Ema died in 1885 and James married 2nd Anna Jenkins daughter of Joshua and Cerrene Elder Jenkins on 6 March 1887. They had an infant son born and died in 1889 buried at Concord cemetery in the Jenkins plot and a daughter Hallie Elizabeth Clark Merriman.

James Barrett Clark died of a heart attack in 1943 at his home 523 Kent at Knoxville and was buried at Graceland Cemetery next to his wife Anna.
