Mr. Russell was born March 5, 1914 at Franklin the son of George and Josephine Kiawaski. Tony was a retired painter who worked for Broadway Lumber in Pittsburg. He was raised in Franklin and attended Franklin schools. He also painted in Chicago and worked at Spencer Chemical before moving back to Pittsburg in 1960. Tony liked to fish, bowl, dance and play his harmonica at Sunset Manor. he married Berenice Davis on Dec. 31, 1941 at San Antonio, Texas. Tony was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Force as a staff sergeant. Mrs. Russell preceded him in death on November 20, 2003. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, the John F. Derby Post #43 American Legion in Frontenac, and the Painters Union. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Girth of Pittsburg, two granddaughters, Amanda Girth of Pittsburg and Dr. Jennifer holt and her husband Clay of Pittsburg, and a sister, Helen Thornhill of Dayton, Ohio. Tony was preceded in death by two sisters, Amelia Kiawaski and Jennie Slack and one brother, Rudy Russell.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday July 17, 2008 at the Fort Scott National Cemetery with Father Robert McElwee officiating. The family will recieve friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma. Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Chapel. The John F. Derby Post #43 American Legion at Frontenac will conduct graveside flag folding services. The family suggests memorials to Angels Among Us. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
