DALTON YOUTH, 17, IS KILLED WHEN HIS CAR TURNS TURTLE

Albert Leon Dalton, the seventeen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dalton, was instantly killed and a Truman Pirtle, the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Pirtle, was seriously injured early Tuesday morning when the car was driven by young Dalton turned over pinning both lads under the car.

The boys had agreed to work for Leeman Coffman on the new building he is completing and had gone to work before seven o'clock.

In about thirty minutes the boys were returning to the Pirtle home to get Truman's boots, as they were to do some ditching.

The car, a Model T Ford, was equipped with large heavy truck tires and the boys had been driving down a grade and were traveling quite rapidly and lost control of the car, when it went into the ditch, turning over, and pinning both boys under the car.

Mrs. Pirtle saw the boys returning and saw the car turn over and ran screaming to the scene of the accident, calling for help, but no one was available for nearly thirty minutes after the tragedy.

The Pirtle lad was rushed to the Bonne Terre Hospital where a close examination was made with X-ray equipment.

The examination revealed no broken bones and while the boy was in serious condition, the exact condition could not be determined at the time. While he was still in serious condition Wednesday, hopes were entertained for his recovery and if no unforeseen complications develop, should recover speedily.

The accident occurred within fifty yards of the Pirtle home and less than a quarter of a mile from the Dalton home, about half a mile off Highway 61 east of Esther.

The sudden death of young Dalton was a severe shock to the family as well as the entire community.

The lad completed the 11th grade in Esther high school and was a leader among the younger set.

He was prominent in school affairs and took an active part in school activities.

The deceased was 16 years, 11 months, and 8 days of age and is survived by the parents, two brothers and three sisters, and many friends.

The funeral is being held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Flat River Church of Christ, with Rev. Henry Maybury of Bonne Terre in charge of the service.

Burial at Parkview cemetery under the direction of the Hood Funeral Service.

The entire community extends their sympathy to the bereaved family.
