Isom was first married to Rebecca Jane Dickens, and they had ten known children. He served the Confederacy as a Private in Company A, 39th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, the "Simpson Greys". Rebecca died in 1893. Per family legend, she had a stroke in the cow pen as she was milking. It is believed that she is buried in the Bart Harrington Cemetery southwest of Magee, in an unmarked grave. On October 11, 1894, Isom married Sarah Elizabeth Coleman.

He was also known as ISOM HARRINGTON, ISHAM HARRINGTON, and ISHAM HERRINGTON. His 1850 - 1900 censuses all have him as Herrington. His Confederate records have him as I. D. HERRINGTON. His children John, Eliza, Nannie, Hattie, and Daniel all went by "Herrington" per records, but Susan, James "Bart", Thomas, and Mike all later in life used "Harrington".
