According to information received from a descendant, Lewis was the son of Lyman and Betsie (Farwell) Spaulding. He was born in Windsor County, Vermont, February 28, 1832.

He was married in Lorain County, Ohio, April 8, 1855, to Louisa M. Graves, daughter of Solomon and Minerva Graves of Vermont who was born in Alleghany County, New York April 6, 1833. Their children were: Emma L. born August 4, 1856; Addie M. born December 26, 1858; Ardelia L., born June 16, 1861; Allen L., born September 9, 1868.

Lewis Spaulding (also spelled Spalding as on his gravestone) of Vermont was a Civil War Veteran. Mr. Spaulding enlisted in Company H, 103rd Regiment O.V.I. in 28 July 1862, served his country faithfully through the war, and was honorably discharged in 2 August 1865. He rose to rank of Wagonmaster.

He first settled in Fulton County, Vermont in 1867. Post-office, Ottokee. Business, farmer, section 35.

By the time of the 1880 US Census, a 49-year old Lewis Spaulding and 49-year old Louisa were living in Amber Township, Mason County, Michigan.

In the household were their daughter, Addie age 21; son, Alan, age 12; son-in-law Marvin Fuller, age 29 and daughter, Ardelia Fuller, age 18. Lewis' occupation is listed as laborer.

Lewis is listed in the United States Soldiers of the Civil War Residing in Michigan, June 1, 1894, so his year of death postdates that census.
