Major League Baseball Player. He was a catcher for six seasons (1963, 1965, 1967 to 1970) with the St, Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a member of two National League Pennant-winning teams (1967 and 1968 Cardinals), including the 1967 World Champion Cardinals and appeared in 4 career total World Series games. In 130 regular season games, he had 53 hits with a lifetime .249 batting average. After retiring as a player, Ricketts served as a coach for nineteen seasons (1971 to 1973, 1974 to 1975, 1978 to 1991) with the Pirates and Cardinals and was on Whitey Herzog's staff when St. Louis won the World Series title in 1982. In addition, he was a minor league instructor with the Cardinals organization. During his collegiate years at Duquesne University, Ricketts excelled at baseball and basketball. He was a member of the Dukes team that won the NIT Championship in 1955. He was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in 1976. His older brother Dick was a professional basketball player in the NBA and briefly pitched in the Major Leagues. He died from cancer one day after his 73rd birthday.
