The records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Gnesen show the birth of "Johann Georg Oesterle" on 17 June 1817 in Braunsfeld near Gnesen, son of "Johann Oesterling" of Braunsfeld and "Anna Maria Vollk." The same church records say Johann Georg was baptised at the church in Gnesen on 22 June 1817. After emigrating to Missouri in 1860 with his wife Wilbura Elisabeth F. Fritz Oesterle and their children, Johann Georg became known as "John Easterla," and his descendants still spell their surname that way.
