Gerald was drafted into the US Army. When Gerald arrived in Vietnam 5 February 1968, he was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.
The battalion was participating in Operation Burlington Trail in the vicinity of Long Son (3) and 13 kilometers south southwest of the Tam Ky Airfield in Quang Tin Province, when A Company encountered hostile forces. Gerald died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile explosive device.
Survived by his parents, Jeremiah G and Theresa Sorrentino of 213 Seaman Avenue, Rockville Centre, New York.
