FINAL RITES HELD FOR MCPHILLIPS
Funeral Conducted at Macy’s Chapel
Funeral services for Arthur McPhillips, who died Saturday in a local hospital at the age of 75, were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Macy’s chapel, with the Elks lodge No. 1283 in full charge. Burial was in St. James’ cemetery.
Mr. McPhillips was born near Sheridan Nov. 15, 1862, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard McPhillips.
Long prominent in the banking field in Yamhill county, Mr. McPhillips was at one time cashier of the First National bank of McMinnville. In about 1910 he started the United States National bank here with George Briedwell, and he served as president of that institution until 1929, when he retired.
At the time of his death, Mr. McPhillips was president of the First Federal Savings and Loan, with which he had been connected for some years, as well as with its predecessor, the American Savings and Loan.
Mr. McPhillips served two terms (1929-30 and 1933-34) in the state legislature as representative from Yamhill county; and he was mayor of McMinnville from December, 1911 to December, 1912.
Beside his affiliation with the Elks lodge, of which he was exalted ruler in 1916, Mr. McPhillips was active in the Masonic order, having filled all the offices of the local lodge.
He was a graduate of Linfield college of the class of 1893.
He married Marguerite Redmond Aug. 5, 1899. One son, B.A. McPhillips, McMinnville, and two grandsons, Bernard Arthur McPhillips jr. and Jack David McPhillips, sons of B.A. McPhillips, survive him.
Mr. McPhillips’ successor in the First Federal Savings and Loan has not yet been named.
