Dolan James was born in the county of Meath, Ireland, March 3, 1841, and died Sept. 30, 1909, aged 68 years, 6 months and 27 days. He spent his childhood days until his eleventh year in the county of his birth, where his father died when he was about five years old, leaving the mother to care for the family. Mrs. Dolan, convinced that she could better care for her family in this new and thriving country, emigrated to America, landing in New York in 1851, leaving her children in Ireland until 1856 when they came to New York.

After living in New York and Pennsylvania for a short time they came to Churubusco, Whitley County, Indiana, and in 1860 moved to Noble County, where he spent the remainder of his days. He joined Company C of the Thirtieth Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was mustered out at Indianapolis Jan. 1866. During his life as a soldier he engaged in a number of battles and he contracted a combination of diseases and as the result, the remainder of his days were spent in extreme cruelty.

He married Mary Jane Guthrie Oct. 29, 1869 and they had four children.
