Businessman. Born in Rochester, New York, he was a philanthropist very much involved with city's economic growth and culture, when he partnered with fellow businessman Hiram Sibley. In 1851, together they had a goal to create a great telegraph system with unified and efficient operations. Thus by 1855, they purchased or merged with other companies and the Western Union was founded. They bought out smaller companies rapidly and by 1860, its lines reached from the East coast regions to the Mississipi River and from the Great Lakes to Ohio. By 1900, their lines operated coast to coast with a million miles of telegraph lines and two international undersea cables. Watson also purchased a building for Rochester Homeopathic Hospital which became the Genesee Hospital. He died in New York City at the age of 84.
