Richard M. Cooper was born in South Carolina and married Mary Matilda Cheek, 14 Nov 1843 in Fayette Co., AL. The Cheeks moved to Red River County about 1846, but it is not yet known if the Coopers accompanied them or followed later.
By May 1850, Richard had established himself in Clarksville, the seat of Red River County, and may have operated a brick yard there. He sold his property in Clarksville in January 1854 and moved his family to Paris soon thereafter.
Lamar County probate records (No. C-192) show that Richard's estate at the time of his death included one 25-acre 'out lot' about 1 mile from Paris; one 12-acre 'homestead' within the corporate limits of Paris; one 3-acre tract in Paris comprising the 'brick yard'; and other assorted property and livestock.
Mary Matilda Cheek, daughter of Valentine Cheek and Elizabeth McGill, was born 13 Aug 1822 in Alabama; died 16 Oct 1901 in Pilot Point, Denton Co., TX; bur. Pilot Point Community Cemetery. Following the death of her first husband, Mary md/2 J. J. Sims, 19 Sep 1858 in Lamar County. J. J. was a carpenter by trade and several years younger than Mary. For whatever reason, their marriage ended in divorce in October 1870.
According to family records, Richard and Mary [Cheek] Cooper had six children: James Knox Polk Cooper (1844-1911), George W. J. Cooper (1847--), Augustus Jesse 'Gus' Cooper (1849-1935), Richard William Thomas Cooper (1850--), Mary Elizabeth Cooper Faulkner (1854-1877) and Martha Cooper Lyons (1856--).
Census records indicate that Mary and J. J. had at least one child, John Y. Sims (born 1860 in Paris), who apparently died young.
