He entered the Army on March 21, 1944, at Camp Dix, N.J., and received infantry training at Camp Wheeler, Ga. He served with the 7th Armored Division under the command of Gen. Bruce C. Clarke, seeing action in the Battle of Metz (France); at Overloon, Holland, where he was wounded; at Mefiel and Asten, both in Holland, and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged June 21, 1945.
Mr. Bateman worked in the wholesale grocery business with his father in Frank I. Bateman Co. for 18 years and in 1952 became an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co. In 1962, he was appointed water and sewer clerk for the city of Ogdensburg, retiring as deputy comptroller in 1978.
He was a former member of Ogdensburg Board of Education; president of the city Civil Service Employees Association; chairman of the Youth Democratic Committee and a 39-year member of the Elks Lodge. He also was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and the 7th Armored Division Association and a life member and charter member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.
He lived most of his life on the St. Lawrence River, enjoyed gardening, fishing, boating, wood-lathe work, golfing and swimming and supported OFA sports.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, James H., and John T. and Nancy, all of Ogdensburg; four grandchildren, a great- granddaughter, three nephews and a niece.
Two sisters, Anna Sanford and Emma Hackett, and a brother, Frank "Buster," died before him.
