Bette M. Abate, 83, died in her home at 1012 Basilone Drive.

Parents: Ahmed and Josephine Klam Hassan.

Husband: Domenic Quinn Abate, married on June 4, 1949. He died Feb. 3, 2006.

She was a retired clerk and had worked at the Nobil Shoe Store in Lawrence Village Plaza for 30 years. Very active with veterans affairs, she was a member and past president of ITAM Post 26 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the 6th Marine Division Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a volunteer at the Butler Veterans Administration Medical Center. She belonged to the auxiliary of the former St. Francis Hospital and was a member of AARP.

Relatives: two daughters and sons-in-law, Gaylene and Howard Beard of Davidsonville, Md., and Karole J. and Jack Guy of Wampum; five brothers, Robert L. Hassan of Pompano Beach, Fl., Eugene K. Hassan of New Castle, Dr. James C. Hassan of Washington, D.C., Albert L. Hassan of Reseda, Calif., and Charles J. Hassan of Richmond Hills, Ga.; four grandchildren, Bryan Guy, R.J. Guy II, Jessica Beard and Jonathan Beard; two nephews; and seven nieces.
