Hans was born in Satrup, Schleswig, Germany. He and his family immigrated to America in 1870. In 1874 he purchased land in Wall Lake township from the Northwestern Railway Co for $5.60 per acre. This farm has been owned and operated by member of the Wollesen family ever since.

Hans combined his ability as a farmer with a skill in repairing clocks for neighbors and friends. In return he was paid with a bottle of wine or food. The services of a jeweler were hard to come by in those days.

Hans and his wife, Maria Claussen, had 4 children: Peter, John, Nicholas, and Katherine.
